Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has sparked fury from Coventry and QPR fans
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is at the centre of outrage from some Coventry City and QPR supporters.
The Tractor Boys arrived back in the Championship this season after a disappointing Premier League campaign, which saw them relegated and 16 points adrift from Tottenham Hotspur in 17th.
Despite this, McKenna’s side were tipped as one of the favourites to achieve promotion to the top-flight in pre-season, due to the large number of quality operators he has in his ranks.
Players such as Jaden Philogene, Sammie Szmodics and Chuba Akpom were expected to fire Ipswich to the title, with few defences in the second-tier able to cope with that overwhelming amount of attacking threat.
However, that didn’t prove to be the case when the season started. The Suffolk side failed to win any of their first four Championship outings, which came as a massive shock to the rest of the division.
The Tractor Boys eventually picked up their form soon after though, with a 5-0 triumph over Sheffield United the catalyst for further victories against Portsmouth and Norwich City.
Ipswich’s win versus the Canaries was particularly satisfying, as it marked the first time in 16 years that the club had achieved this feat in the league.
McKenna’s turnaround at Portman Road was subsequently recognised by the EFL, who named him as the Manager of the Month for September. However, this decision has not gone down well with Coventry City and QPR supporters.
Both Coventry and QPR enjoyed solid spells during the month of September, with Frank Lampard and Julien Stephan both guiding their sides further up the Championship standings.
Given the fact that Ipswich arguably have the best team in the league and only sit ninth in the table, there was a certain element of disbelief from supporters that McKenna had been handed the award.
“Julian Stephan was robbed,” stated a QPR fan. “Same amount of points in September & above Ipswich into the Play Offs. Same month Qpr won away to Bristol City where Ipswich only drew & technically lost to Blackburn too. Stephan went from winless in first 3 games to unbeaten in September. Joke.”
“So, Coventry City are unbeaten,” exclaimed a Sky Blues supporter. “Top of the league, top scorers in England (Europe?), with 3 of the top 5 individual top scorers in the league. Not a single nomination! Make it make sense? Literally 8 better managers in the league, most without parachute payments!”
“Maybe we needed to average 5 goals every game, for Frank to win manager of the month?” commented another Coventry fan, making reference to his side’s brilliant offensive record.
There were supporters from other clubs in the Championship who also couldn’t wrap their heads around the decision to hand McKenna the award.
“Why would a manager with a premier league squad languishing mid table win an award for September manager of the month???” chimed in a Middlesbrough fan, clearly unsure about the decision.
“Leicester, Bristol city, Boro and QPR all picked up more points in September. Coventry and Stoke picked up the same number of points whilst scoring more goals.”
Although Frank Lampard was overlooked for the Manager of the Month award in September, it could be argued that he already has one hand on October’s prize.
The Sky Blues have started the month in flying form, recording a 4-0 victory away at Millwall before besting Sheffield Wednesday 5-0 at Hillsborough.
There are still four more second-tier contests in the month, but with the way that Coventry are currently playing, it seems almost impossible for the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Watford and Wrexham to stop their goalscoring antics.
As a result, Lampard may be rewarded for his efforts sooner rather than later.
