The opening minutes of Egypt’s AFCON 2025 semi final against Senegal produced the first major consequence of the night as Hossam Abdelmaguid became the match’s first casualty with suspension triggering booking.

The Egypt defender was shown yellow card in the 7 minute for heavy challenge ruling him out of his country’s next fixture in the tournament.

Abdelmaguid had already been booked in the quarter final against Ivory Coast and the second caution means automatic suspension.

Egypt will play again either on Saturday in the third place play off or on Sunday in the final depending on the outcome of the semi final. Abdelmaguid will not be available for either scenario.

The Pharaohs also entered the match with list of players at risk. Mohamed El Shenawy, Ramy Rabia, Marwan Attia and Ahmed Fatouh were all one booking away from missing the next game.

Senegal were not spared. Ten minute after Abdelmaguid’s booking, Kalidou Koulibaly went into the referee’s notebook meaning the Teranga Lions captain will also miss their next match.

Matters worsened in the 41 minute when Habib Diarra received yellow card confirming his suspension as well.

The Teranga Lions now face similar concerns, with Pape Gueye, Habib Diallo, Ibrahim Mbaye, Ismail Jakobs and Nicolas Jackson all walking disciplinary tightrope.
