Players from Eintracht Frankfurt’s men’s and women’s teams treated the children at the SOS Children’s Village in Frankfurt to a festive, pre-Christmas afternoon.
Eintracht Frankfurt held a Christmas-themed reading session at the SOS Children’s Village in the Frankfurt district of Sossenheim on Wednesday afternoon. Pia Wolter and Erëleta Memeti were there from the women’s team, while Michael Zetterer and Nnamdi Collins represented the men’s squad.
The initiative stemmed from a desire from the teams and coaching staff to give something back, particularly during the Christmas period. Together, the Eintracht family wanted to spend time with the children and spread some joy.
Following a brief welcome from stadium announcer Daniel Wolf and the introduction of the players, a lively afternoon unfolded for more than 50 children between the ages of seven and 14, who listened to Eintracht’s Christmas stories in two groups.
Pia Wolter and Michael Zetterer kicked off an afternoon of reading, followed by Erëleta Memeti and Nnamdi Collins. The players took turns reading the 12 chapters of the story, while the children listened attentively, and eagerly followed every word.
Afterwards, an animated question-and-answer session followed. The children had a wide range of things they wanted to find out about, including how the players feel when they walk out into the stadium, how they handle wins and defeats, and what their paths into professional football were like. The players’ maths grades and Christmas wishes were also of great interest.
Over the course of these conversations, it became clear just how important family, friends and a supportive environment are. The players spoke about how the support, trust and backing of those close to them helped them believe in themselves, have courage and pursue their dreams.
At the end of the event the children were given gifts, much to their delight, which nicely rounded off a festive afternoon. The players bought the presents with money from their respective team funds, while they also purchased two mini goals which were given to the SOS Children’s Village Frankfurt and will be available to all the children to use. As such, not only the memory of a special day will remain, but also a lasting gift for the community.
