Eliesse Ben Seghir has reflected on the choice that meant he did not join Marseille, instead entering Monaco’s academy.
“Honestly, even today I could not explain it. I cried when I was told I was not going to OM,” he told Afrikickmedia.
“I also chose for my family, because they wanted safety first and thought Marseille was not the best place for me to develop. I was still young, I listened to my family. But I cried.”
Born in Gassin, the winger was among the south’s most coveted prospects and could have joined OM, where his brother Salim was already playing, before opting for Monaco.
He developed at Monaco, making 85 senior appearances, then moved to Bayer Leverkusen in summer 2025.
He is currently with Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations.
