Elland Road drew praise for its response to a Ramadan pause during Leeds United’s FA Cup win over Norwich City, with players applauded after breaking their fast.

Leeds issued a pre-match statement asking supporters to respect fast-breaking by Norwich players and Leeds forward Joel Piroe. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, referee Darren England halted play in the second half as Norwich prepared substitutions, allowing Piroe and a visiting player to take food and water before they returned to the pitch to applause.

The moment followed national headlines from the Manchester City game, when booing was heard as visiting players broke their fasts. Daniel Farke and the club later said many in the ground had not realised what was happening, with no prior messaging and the pause resembling a previous City tactical timeout.

Farke watched from the West Stand because he served a one-match ban for a post-game red card against Man City.

He said football shows how people from different passports, cultures and religions can unite behind one goal, adding that in difficult times it was a good sign and, in his view, a perfect message.
