Manchester City have secured their first major signing of the 2026 summer window by reaching a blockbuster agreement with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson.
Hugo Viana identified the England international as his number one transfer target for the summer transfer window, and certainly his priority to bolster a midfield engine room that had lost Bernardo Silva upon the expiry of the veteran’s contract last season.
Despite links to the likes of Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali – who remains a player on City’s radar – all attentions and efforts were fixated on securing the Whitley Bay-born midfielder.
With a deal worth in the region of £116 million agreed with City Ground officials – a new Manchester City club record signing – focus now turns to how the Englishman will be integrated into Enzo Maresca’s set-up.
The offices at the City Football Academy have operated with financial conviction in the last few days in order to ensure they hand their incoming manager Enzo Maresca a special welcoming gift ahead of his official start date.
Following the conclusion of the Pep Guardiola dynasty, sporting director Hugo Viana recognised that City’s midfield required the immediate rejuvenation to handle another punishing domestic and continental calendar – particularly in light of Bernardo Silva’s exit and ongoing uncertainty surrounding the likes of Rodri and Nico Gonzalez.
By fending off heavy rival interest from Manchester United, City moved decisively to land the 23-year-old, who notably registered two brilliant assists against the Old Trafford club towards the end of the last season.
The logistical execution of the agreement unfolded at pace in the final days of June, with Manchester City medical personnel now set to oversee medical testing in New York with Anderson currently starring at the World Cup for England.
Anderson has started both of Thomas Tuchel’s opening Group L fixtures against Croatia and Ghana, and will be keen to put his stamp on the final clash against Panama after two comfortable showings on the world stage.
Elliot Anderson’s performance during England’s 0-0 draw against Ghana at Boston Stadium provided a flawless display of his tactical maturity, where he dictated play by completing 66 out of 74 passes alongside three tackles won and five recoveries of ball possession.
His ability to marry a relentless work-rate with possession retention makes him arguably the ultimate weapon to integrate alongside Rodri, giving Enzo Maresca a highly resilient defensive screen to allow forward-thinking names to operate with offensive freedom.
Furthermore, the versatility Anderson developed during his two-season stay at the City Ground – where he inspired Nottingham Forest to a historic seventh-place finish in 2024/25 and a UEFA Europa League semi-final run last campaign – offers City an invaluable asset.
Newcastle United facing huge regret in Manchester City’s Elliot Anderson pursuit
Eddie Howe openly lamented losing his Newcastle prodigy under Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR) pressures, labelling the talent’s departure in 2024 as “the most reluctant transfer I’ll ever do” due to the player’s potential.
And, as Manchester City finalise the administrative details over Anderson’s signing, the England star’s pending arrival proves that while the iconic Pep Guardiola era has drawn to a close, the club’s relentless pursuit of success is seemingly built to endure and last.
