Elliot Anderson: Newcastle make major decision on pursuit of United target

Manchester United’s summer pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson will be no walk in the park. The Red Devils are planning to reinforce the middle of the park ahead of the new season, with the area fast emerging as one that requires urgent attention.

The Premier League giants are all set to bid farewell to Casemiro, who will leave the Theatre of Dreams once his contract expires at the end of this season. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte’s future also hangs in the balance after failing to impress since joining United as the Brazilian’s potential successor in 2024.

Casemiro has rolled back the years under Carrick and the Red Devils will need someone who can make an immediate impact to fill his shoes. Recent reports have suggested that they have identified Anderson as an option for the job.

Casemiro’s ideal replacement?

Anderson has gone from strength to strength this season despite Forest’s struggles so far. Only Granit Xhaka (107) and Bruno Fernandes (105) have registered more successful long passes than the Englishman (101) in the Premier League this season.

Meanwhile, no player has won more duels (239) than Anderson in the league this campaign, highlighting his dominance in the middle of the park. That perhaps also makes him the ideal replacement for Casemiro, as well as a fantastic partner for Kobbie Mainoo in the heart of United’s midfield.

The 23 year old has registered two goals and two assists in the league this season, starting all 29 games so far.

Anderson’s efforts have earned him admirers at Manchester City as well, although recent reports have suggested that United remain optimistic about getting their man. However, a major twist in the player’s situation has now emerged that may not please fans.

Newcastle United plotting Anderson return

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United could consider their prodigal son’s return if either Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes leaves this summer. The report states: “Newcastle United could yet spring a surprise on Manchester United and Manchester City by making a shock move to bring academy graduate Elliot Anderson back to St James’ Park this summer if they lose one of their star midfielders, TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal.”

“The Magpies are bracing themselves for significant interest in their squad during the upcoming transfer window, with both Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali attracting attention from top clubs across Europe. Sources indicate that if Newcastle were to lose either player, contingency plans are already being discussed internally and Anderson’s name has been mentioned as a potential replacement option.”

The report states that Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson could play a major role in Anderson’s return to St James’ Park. The report adds: “The midfielder, who came through Newcastle’s academy system, left his boyhood club in 2024 to join Nottingham Forest in a £35m deal that raised eyebrows at the time.”

“Ironically, the man who could help facilitate a return to Tyneside is Ross Wilson — the sporting chief who played a key role in convincing Anderson to leave Newcastle and join Forest two years ago. Wilson’s close knowledge of the player and his situation would make him a central figure if discussions over a potential return were to gather pace.”

Final Thoughts

United managed to see off competition from Newcastle United last summer during their pursuit of attacking reinforcements and can repeat the trick this year as well. With Casemiro set to leave, the Red Devils must do everything possible to secure Anderson’s signature, especially since the midfield is crying out for a player of his calibre.
