Elliot Anderson, the 23-year-old English international and a key figure for Nottingham Forest, missed the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Porto following the death of his mother. He later shared a heartfelt message on social media.
Forest won 1-0 in the return leg to reach the semi-finals, having drawn 1-1 in the first game at the Dragão.
The player said in a post that his mother was the most special person he could have known, always laughing, smiling and dancing, bringing joy every day. He reflected on her fight over the past year, praising her determination and resilience, which left him immensely proud.
He expressed eternal gratitude for everything she did for the family, saying she gave her children a wonderful life and that they wanted to give back and make her proud. He added that he feels she is watching over them, that she remains his greatest motivation, and he signed off with a loving farewell.
Team-mates and players from other clubs responded to the message with supportive reactions.
