Elye Wahi, currently at the World Cup with Côte d’Ivoire, is under scrutiny over suspected betting irregularities linked to his yellow card in Nice’s 0-0 draw with Metz on 17 May.

According to The Athletic, the 23-year-old was arrested a fortnight before the tournament as part of a probe, then released without charge, with investigations led by the Marseille prosecutor’s office continuing.

He was detained immediately after the play-off second leg against Saint-Étienne, a 4-1 win in which he scored twice. The striker spent the second half of the season on loan at Nice from Frankfurt.

The inquiry covers suspected fraud and organised corruption, criminal concealment and money laundering. The French league received several alerts over unusual bets on Nice v Metz, triggering the process.

In the 35th minute of that match, Wahi was booked for a late tackle on Sadibou Sané, two minutes after a dangerous foul on Bouna Sarr.

A complaint was filed on 29 May 2026 for suspected sporting corruption and organised fraud, and the league has left open possible disciplinary action as the case develops. The league remains fully mobilised to safeguard its competitions and will act firmly against conduct that could compromise them.

Wahi started for Côte d’Ivoire in the 1-0 win over Ecuador between Sunday and Monday, struck the bar after the break and went off shortly before the hour.
