Striker Sebastiano Esposito gave Inter Milan a clear demonstration of what they’re missing with his top-class goal for Empoli.

Technically, striker Esposito is on loan at Empoli from Inter.

The 22-year-old joined the Tuscan side on loan during the summer transfer window. They are the first Serie A side to have taken a chance on him.

Previously, Esposito had had a series of loan spells at the likes of SPAL, Venezia, Basel, Anderlecht, Bari, and Sampdoria.

But Empoli do have a purchase option. They can sign Esposito on a permanent basis for a fee of €5 million.

Moreover, there is no buyback option for Inter. However, the Nerazzurri would have a 20% sell-on fee.

Empoli have made it clear that they have every intention of signing Esposito permanently at the end of the season.

Therefore, for all intents and purposes, the young striker is no longer an Inter player. The Nerazzurri have no real control over his future.

And that could be the cause of some regret for Inter.

Esposito actually did not start for Empoli against his parent club yesterday. That was something of a surprise considering he’s been one of the Tuscan team’s key men this campaign.

However, Esposito did come off the bench during the second half.

And instantly, the 22-year-old’s pace and technical quality gave the Nerazzurri defense – and particularly Stefan de Vrij – something much different to think about.

Esposito even managed to get himself on the scoresheet. It only proved to be a consolation goal, but it gave Inter a scare.

And it was a very well-taken goal. Esposito’s control, turn, footwork, and finish were all top-class.

At the other end of the pitch, Inter had relied on Mehdi Taremi to lead the line. And it was an uninspiring display from the Iranian international.

For the Gazzetta, the question is inevitable of whether Inter would have been better off simply keeping hold of Esposito.
