Today they received a court order to shut down all their activities by 31 July and deliver the keys to their premises “free from staff or property”.

The club have been in profound financial hardship for several years, ever since relegation to the lower leagues in 2008 following the “Apito Final” bribery scandal.

The Porto-based outfit made a resurgence and got back into the top flight, but a disastrous association with French investor Gérard López only accentuated the administrative and financial malaise afflicting the club.

Boavista were relegated from the Primeira Liga in 2024/25 and were supposed to play in the second tier last season, but had their registration refused to play in Liga 2 or Liga 3.

They ended up in the Porto district league, but only played three matches before dropping out of the division at a time when they were prohibited from signing new players.

The club’s Bessa stadium was put up for auction, but the process was reverted when the insolvency liquidator managed to forge an agreement with the institution’s many creditors.

The club’s main fan group, the Panteras Negras, has called it the darkest day in the club’s history. It says it has created a new club named “Panteras Negras Footballers Club” in an attempt to keep the spirit and the name of the club alive.
