After a slow start, Italy found their rhythm and Mateo Retegui struck twice to give the Azzurri a comfortable win. That victory ensures Italy a World Cup play-off position.

Ferguson's second half header leads Ireland to victory over 10-man Armenia. Ireland have four points in their group and still have an outside chance of reaching the World Cup.

FULL TIME: Hungary 2-2 Portugal

Szoboszlai's late stunner downs Portugal, who were heading towards the World Cup this evening. Despite Ronaldo's early double, Portugal will have to wait to book their spot at next year's finals.

That is a massive goal for Ireland's slim World Cup qualification chances. Evan Ferguson scores it, nodding in from Will Smallbone's pinpoint cross.

Andrea Cambiaso finds the net for Italy but is miles offside. That one is ruled out.

CHANCE IRELAND

Ireland are starting to play with more urgency since Armenia's dismisal and Jason Molumby curls just wide inside the area.

Portugal try to extend their lead in Hungary but are resorting to long-range efforts. Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Dias fail to threaten with speculative efforts from distance.

The Three Lions double their lead and Harry Kane bags a goal on his return. The Bayern man controls on the edge of the area and lashes a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

Ireland are riding their luck here and  Eduard Spertsyan's first-time shot from close range somehow ends up in the side netting.

CHANCE HUNGARY!

Hungary continue to push against Portugal and Bendeguz Bolla's fierce volley skims the post.

Gordon has been bright for England this evening and his excellent cross into the area somehow evades everyone and drifts out of the Latvian area.

GOAL SPAIN!

Spain have struck first at home against Bulgaria. Mikel Merino gets on the scoresheet with a well-timed header into the bottom corner.

Hungary aren't sitting back after conceding and continue to look dangerous. Szoboszlai is at the centre of everything and whips a dangerous pass across the goalmouth.

Anthony Gordon dribbles into the Latvia penalty area and curls in with his unfavoured right foot. Well-taken!

GOAL PORTUGAL

The Hungarian lead did not last long and Portugal are back on level terms and Ronaldo gets his goal, slotting low into the net from Nélson Semedo's low cross. We have a new all-time top scorer in World Cup Qualifying games people!

CHANCE ISRAEL

Italy have had the better half-chances in the first 20 minutes in Udine. But Oscar Gloukh is found in a dangerous position and lashes just wide of the post.

CHANCE ARMENIA

Eduard Spertsyan drives at the Ireland defence and unleashes a shot straight at Caoimhin Kelleher.

Italy have had the better of the early exchanges against Israel. Giacomo Raspadori has just pulled a shot wide from a decent position.

Wow! Elsewhere in England's group, Andorra have just stunned Serbia with an early goal. 1-0 to the minnows!

A positive start for Hungary. Is there a way back for Portugal?

The hosts break the deadlock against Portugal. Attila Szalai applies the finish, rising highest to meet Dominik Szoboszlai's cross to header in.

Ronaldo tries to break the World Cup Qualifying scoring record early with a powerful shot from the edge of the area. It sails harmlessly over the bar.

A whipped Anthony Gordon cross into the area falls perfectly to Harry Kane but the England skipper puts it wide.

A big night for Portugal's captain in Hungary this evening.

If Ireland either defeats or draw with Armenia, then the door would be open for Portugal to secure qualification this evening. The Seleção head to Hungary this evening, aiming to extend their 100% winning record in Group F.

The Republic of Ireland host Armenia this evening and Heimir Hallgrímsson's outfit must win in Dublin to keep any chance of qualifying for the World Cup alive. The hosts are currently bottom of Group F with just one point from three games.

England can seal World Cup qualification with a win in Latvia. As a result, Thomas Tuchel has named a strong lineup in Riga, with captain Harry Kane returning to the fold.
