England head to next year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico looking every bit the finished article under Thomas Tuchel.
Brought in last year with the aim of finally ending the country’s long wait for a major trophy, he’s taken the Three Lions through qualifying in flawless fashion - eight wins from eight, 22 goals scored and not a single one conceded.
Sunday’s 2-0 win over Albania wrapped up a perfect campaign, even though England had already booked their place before the final Group K match.
The clean sheet also sealed a bit of history. England have become only the second European side ever to win every game in a World Cup qualifying phase without conceding, matching a feat last achieved by Yugoslavia back in 1954.
It’s also just the second time England have gone through World Cup qualifying without letting in a goal; the only other occasion was in the build-up to Italia ’90, when they finished the group unbeaten with three wins and three goalless draws.
The Three Lions now head to the tournament having reached the final of the last two European Championships and with momentum that suggests they’re serious contenders to end the wait that stretches all the way back to 1966.
