England have locked in a place in the knockout stage of the World Cup 2026 ahead of their final group game against Panama on Saturday.
The Three Lions are sitting top of Group L on four points, which are enough to secure at least one of the eight third-placed qualification spots.
England only needed the third-place team in four of the 12 groups to finish on three points or fewer.
That outcome was achieved after Uruguay were dumped out of the tournament following a 1-0 loss to Spain.
England came into the World Cup as one of the favourites to lift the golden trophy after a historic qualifying campaign of eight wins from eight with no goals conceded.
Thomas Tuchel’s men got off to a solid start in North America, beating Croatia 4-2 at the AT&T Stadium courtesy of goals by Harry Kane (2), Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford.
They were quickly brought back down to earth by Ghana, who held them to a frustrating goalless draw in the second group match on Tuesday.
Despite their attacking riches, England failed to break down Ghana’s low block and ultimately were forced to settle for a point.
While qualification to the round of 32 is now guaranteed, they need a victory against Panama to top Group L.
Panama are already out of the tournament and only have pride to play for against England.
