England will face Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals after a dramatic night in the Americas that also featured officiating rows, a tribute to Jayden Adams, and racially charged remarks by Mariano Rajoy published in El Debate.

In stifling Miami heat, England beat Norway 2-1 after extra time on Saturday to reach a World Cup semi-final for the fourth time, and the first since 2018. Andreas Schjelderup put Norway ahead in the 36th minute before Jude Bellingham levelled in the 45+2 and struck the winner in the 93rd, taking him to six goals, level with Harry Kane. The Three Lions continue their pursuit of a first major title since 1966.

Norway protested that an aerial camera touched the ball during a clearance in the build-up to England’s equaliser, but the goal stood. Making a first quarter-final in their history, Erling Haaland’s side created chances and had a goal ruled offside.

Argentina also needed extra time to defeat Switzerland 3-1. Mac Allister scored inside 10 minutes, Ndoye equalised after sustained Swiss pressure, then Embolo was sent off following a VAR review by Portuguese referee Pinheiro after earlier being booked.

Switzerland forced extra time, but Julian Alvarez curled in off the top corner of Kopel’s goal and Lautaro Martinez sealed it. Argentina will meet England on Wednesday at 21:00.

Across the quarter-finals in Miami and Kansas City, a minute’s silence honoured South Africa’s Jayden Adams, found dead in Cape Town aged 25 shortly after returning from the tournament.

Rajoy’s column about France drew condemnation for implying the team excelled without French players. Elsewhere, Colombia’s Jaminton Campaz received death threats after his missed penalty against Switzerland, has not returned home, and an investigation has been opened.
