Dominic Calvert-Lewin is back in the fold after five years out of favour

Manchester United pair Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have been rewarded for their upturns in form with returns to the England squad, as Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori earned surprise selections from Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel on Friday named an enlarged 35-man squad for friendlies this month against Uruguay and Japan, which will be “divided into basically two camps”, according to the Three Lions boss.

He said: “We bring players in that we haven’t seen who haven’t played so much to open up the picture, and the competition for plane tickets to the US.

“Then from Friday and Saturday, a group of players will come into camp – ten or eleven players who get a rest before and we will then go with a new group and mix of players into the match against Japan.”

This is the final squad before Tuchel names his 26-man selection for this summer’s World Cup, and a number of fringe players have a chance to impress the boss.

Tomori and Mainoo have not played since October 2023 and the final of Euro 2024, respectively, while Calvert-Lewin last played for England in a Euros quarter-final in 2021.

James Garner can stake his claim

Everton’s James Garner, who has started every game for his club this season, has earned a first-ever call-up, while Newcastle pair Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall will look to make the full-back positions their own.

There is no call-up for Ollie Watkins, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Trent Alexander-Arnold or Luke Shaw, but Dominic Solanke, Djed Spence, Nico O’Reilly and Phil Foden are all selected.

So, too, are Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, who is returning from injury, and Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer, whose involvement under Tuchel has been restricted to 65 minutes against Andorra due to ill-timed injuries.

Burnley defender Kyle Walker retired from international duty on 96 caps last week, presumably after a conversation with Tuchel over his chances of being involved this month.

Brighton’s Jason Steele, 35, is the fifth goalkeeper named, though his involvement is expected to be more as a training-ground presence rather than with any eye toward the veteran earning game time.

The snubs of Watkins, Lewis-Skelly, and Alexander-Arnold suggest their World Cup dreams are over, and the same appears true for Luke Shaw, who was being widely tipped for a recall after his heavy involvement for United this season.

Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Jack Grealish and James Maddison are all injured, so were not under consideration for this squad.
