Sarina Wiegman has named a 25-player England squad for June’s final 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, with Aggie Beever-Jones, Freya Godfrey and Ella Toone all back in the group after injury. The Lionesses face Spain in Palma on Friday 5 June before hosting Ukraine at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium on Tuesday 9 June.

The squad was confirmed by The Football Association, with Wiegman saying the early announcement gives players “important clarity” as the club season closes. She added that England have put themselves in “the strongest possible position” and now have the chance to qualify “at the earliest opportunity”.

Qualification context / fixture detail

There is obvious weight on the Spain trip. The world champions remain the benchmark in this group and the fixture still carries its own edge after the 2023 World Cup final, while UEFA’s qualifying structure leaves little room for drift in the final window.

Wiegman said Spain and Ukraine will provide “different tests”, describing the away game in Palma as one of the toughest fixtures available in women’s football. She also pointed to the significance of finishing the campaign in Liverpool, with the Ukraine game taking England to Everton’s new ground after the FA’s recent push to spread fixtures around the country.

England took four points from the previous qualifier window, including the home draw with Spain and a win over Ukraine, and that has left the group finely placed heading into these last two matches, as seen in recent England squad news before the Iceland qualifier. Full standings and fixtures remain central to how quickly qualification can be wrapped up, with the FA fixture list available via England’s official schedule.

Returning players – detail and context

Ella Toone’s return is the headline one in midfield. The Manchester United playmaker has only recently got back on the pitch at club level, with her comeback for United ending a lengthy spell out, and her inclusion restores one of Wiegman’s most trusted attacking midfield options.

Beever-Jones is back in the forwards after her own injury interruption. Chelsea’s striker had forced herself seriously into the England conversation before that setback, and this call suggests she is back in contention at a key point in the cycle, especially with wider selection debates still live ahead of 2027, as reflected in earlier She Kicks squad discussion.

Godfrey’s recall is another notable one. The forward has benefited from regular senior football and offers a different profile in the front line, while Wiegman’s decision to bring her back in now points to continued interest rather than a one-off look earlier in the campaign.

Notable absences or broader selection notes

Wiegman has gone with a familiar core again, but there are still a few points of interest in the balance of the squad. The defensive unit remains experienced and stable, while the attack includes both established tournament players and younger options still trying to nail down a place for the longer term.

That makes these two qualifiers important beyond the immediate task of securing qualification. With Spain away and Ukraine at home, England have one elite-level test and one home occasion at a new venue to sharpen the picture before the next phase of the cycle.
