Thomas Tuchel called both Adam Wharton and Trevoh Chalobah to explain why they had not been selected for England this month — but did not reach out to Kyle Walker.

When announcing his squad on Friday, Tuchel named a similar group for October games against Wales and Latvia to those called up in September.

The England head coach left out Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish and, in the only changes, replaced the injured Tino Livramento and Noni Madueke with fit-again Bukayo Saka.

Crystal Palace midfielder Wharton and Chelsea centre-back Chalobah were both left out.

Asked who he had phoned to explain their omission, Tuchel replied: “Adam Wharton, Trevoh Chalobah, Phil, Jack, Jude, Curtis Jones.”

Tuchel added: “Normally the procedure is that I inform the guys personally who were in the last camp and are left out. So I call them, I explain to them why, so they hear it from me.

“If you are in camp, you maybe have the expectation, if you did nothing wrong and everything went OK, that you are selected in the next camp. This is normally the procedure.

“This was a bit different procedure this time, because there was only two players left out who were in any way injured, so there was no one [else] left out from this camp. And, still, I felt that it was necessary to speak to the guys that I just mentioned and explain to them the decisions personally, so they understand.”

Veteran right-back Walker is on 96 caps, four appearances away from joining a list of only ten players with 100 caps for the Three Lions.

But the Burnley defender has not been called up since June and seemingly faces a fight to return to the international fold.

“I will not get into details now who got a call and not,” Tuchel replied, before confirming that he had not rung the 35-year-old, adding: “At the moment, the others are ahead of him.”
