Three Lions must battle the co-hosts, and the elements, to reach the quarter-finals
The Three Lions must overcome Mexico, the Azteca Stadium and the elements if they are to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals this evening. England face an intimidating last-16 clash in Mexico City, in what is, by some distance, their tricky test of the tournament yet, as they look to subject their hosts to just a third defeat in 90 games.
Victory over DR Congo was narrow on paper, with Harry Kane scoring twice in the final 15 minutes, but Thomas Tuchel will have been largely pleased by the efforts of his players. He will need more tonight though, in very taxing conditions. El Tricolor’s home base, one of the greatest stadiums in the world, sits 2,240 metres above sea level. It goes some way to explaining Mexico’s fearsome home record.
Declan Rice looks set to be passed fit, despite complaining of “terrible pain” after the last-32 win. Anthony Gordon will be pushing to get the nod ahead of Marcus Rashford on the left wing, while Bukayo Saka is looking it oust Arsenal team-mate Noni Madueke on the opposite flank. Follow the game LIVE below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Dom Smith high up in the Azteca.
