Three Lions eyeing semi-final spot but face familiar face

The Three Lions squeaked into the last eight after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in the early hours of Monday morning, with a peak overnight television audience tuning in across the country despite the delayed kick-off time.

Thomas Tuchel’s men had Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane to thank once again as their star duo netted the crucial goals that saw them progress.

Their opponents are a bit more a surprise, however, with most slating Brazil to be the likely counterparts in Miami, Florida.

However, it is Stale Solbakken’s Norway who England will face the Hard Rock Stadium, after Erling Haaland’s late brace knocked the Selecao out in stunning style in the last 16.

England vs Norway team news

For England, there are three main concerns.

Reece James, Marc Guehi and Declan Rice all missed training on Thursday, undertaking their own individual programmes after the Mexico win.

James, the Chelsea right-back, had sat out the last two games with a hamstring injury, but is believed to be in line for a comeback, while Rice is also managing some lower back pain, which he played through against Mexico.

Centre-back Guehi has started all but the first match against Croatia, and was absent from training as a precautionary measure.

Otherwise, Thomas Tuchel has a full complement to select from, but he is unlikely to deviate from what has worked well so far in north America.

Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, James Trafford

Defenders: Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Jarell Quansah, Nico O'Reilly, Dan Burn, Djed Spence

Midfielder: Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Morgan Rogers, Kobbie Mainoo, Eberechi Eze

Forwards: Harry Kane, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Gordon

As for the Norwegians, their camp was struck down by a nasty bug in the build-up to this match.

"All players are healthy now. Very little fuss considering that we have been close together for almost six weeks. We are in control,” she said.

As such, it means that Solbakken has a full crop to select from, and that could see star marksman Erling Haaland go up against his Premier League colleagues. The same can be said of Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, who will lock horns with club-mate Rice in the engine room.

Defenders: Kristoffer Ajer, Torbjorn Heggem, Leo Skiri Ostigard, Julian Ryerson, Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, David Moller Wolfe, Fredrik Bjorkan, Sondre Langas, Henrik Falchener

Midfielders: Martin Odegaard, Sander Berge, Fredrik Aursnes, Patrick Berg, Kristian Thorstvedt, Antonio Nusa, Oscar Bobb, Andreas Schjelderup, Jens Petter Hauge, Thelo Aasgaard, Morten Thorsby

Forwards: Erling Braut Haaland, Alexander Sorloth, Jorgen Strand Larsen

England vs Norway prediction

This will be a tougher game than many think, especially after the Scandinavian’s shock win over Brazil.

They have that ruthlessness in front of goal with Haaland, but he does need the service in order to finish those chances.

Snuff that out, and the Three Lions could be in business. Leave yourselves open to a counter-attack, and you could be in trouble.

England to win, 2-1 after extra time.
