England captain Harry Kane says the campaign in the United States, Canada and Mexico is ‘probably the best opportunity’ for him to win the World Cup.

Kane enters the tournament on the back of a superb domestic season in which he scored 61 goals and created seven assists for Bayern Munich. Those stats, alongside triumphs in the Bundesliga and the DFB-Cup, make Kane a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or but he will need a strong World Cup campaign to remain in contention.

Yet, the 32-year-old is more focused on helping the Three Lions overcome 60-years of hurt and finally win another major trophy in the anniversary year of the 1966 World Cup win.

Kane is also actuely aware that this tournament, his third, could also be his last. In an interview with ITV he said: “It could be your last because you never know what happens in football.

“You know what I’m like, I want to play for a long, long time. I feel in my prime, as fit as I’ve ever felt, that hunger is there but it could be my last.”

The Three Lions talisman added: “The World Cup, for me, is the pinnacle of any career. This is my third tournament now and I’ll probably just say, the shape I’m in and coming off the season I’ve had it’s probably the best opportunity I’ll get in my career to win the World Cup.”

Kane was also probed on whether he gives any credence to the criticism that England are too reliant on his abilities and whether that increases the pressure on him personally.

“I think any top striker in the team there’s going to be a reliance on the striker to score goals,” he said. “I think Erling [Haaland] with Norway, [Kylian] Mbappe with France, when you have a main goalscorer in your team you’re expected to score the goals. It doesn’t mean that’s a bad thing.

“I do think we have goals from other areas in the team. When you look at the squad that we’ve picked we’ve also got great winners in the team, everyone’s pretty much had successful season’s this year in terms of trophies in the squad which I think is an important factor.

“Look, people might say they’re going to rely on me but that’s a responsibility I’ve had throughout my whole career. We haven’t won in an England shirt for 60 years; we’ve been extremely close and knocking on that door. Now it’s time to step over that line for sure.”
