Lyon’s young English striker Alejandro Gomes Rodriguez stole the headlines in their 4-2 Europa League win over PAOK last night, becoming the club’s youngest-ever scorer in a European match.

The night started with another teenager, Rémi Himbert, opening the scoring for Lyon. At 17 years and 11 months, Himbert became the youngest player in the club’s history to net in a European competition, breaking the record previously held by Karim Benzema since 2005. But it was Alejandro who really made history later in the second half.

The England U20 forward came off the bench to round off the 4-2 win at just 17 years, 10 months and 19 days. That strike meant he not only became Lyon’s youngest-ever scorer in European competition, but also the fifth youngest Englishman to find the net in a Europa League game.

The former Southampton forward is part of a very promising Lyon squad featuring other English players like Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Tyler Morton.

Under the guidance of former Roma and AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca, the side is shaping up to be one of the most exciting young teams to watch in Europe this season.
