Enzo Maresca has provided an injury update on Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, who was forced off just eight minutes into Saturday's Premier League defeat to Aston Villa.

Despite being frozen out last summer, Chalobah was recalled from loan at Crystal Palace last month amid centre-back injuries and has been a regular starter over the past few weeks.

It was therefore a cause of concern to see the 25-year-old withdrawn so early, with Tosin Adarabioyo brought on to replace him and complete the game as Chelsea took the lead but eventually lost.

There already doesn't appear, however, to be anything majorly worrying, with Maresca saying that although a more in-depth assessment is required, the early signs are positive for Chalobah.

"We'll see, it's early. He looks quite good now," the Italian told reporters.

Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana are currently sidelined, while Chelsea allowed Axel Disasi to join Aston Villa at the end of the January transfer window after he was deemed surplus to requirements.

Fofana could return to action before the March international break, despite it initially being suggested he might not play again this season. Maresca has still stressed the importance of the Frenchman not being "rushed" back to fitness, though. Badiashile is expected to be available slightly sooner, described by Maresca as being in the "process" of re-joining the squad.

Of more immediate concern for Chelsea is stopping the recent slump in form that has set in. Saturday’s defeat was a fourth in the last five games across all competitions, taking only three points from the last 12 on offer in the Premier League.

The Blues face bottom club Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, which should be a banker, although nothing is guaranteed given how 2025 has unfolded so far.
