Eray Cömert is Valencia’s leading World Cup hope after Stole Dimitrievski’s North Macedonia went out. With no Valencia player in Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad, the club could head to North America without representation for the first time since 2014.

According to Superdeporte, the 28-year-old Swiss defender, who has Turkish roots, is back in Murat Yakin’s latest squad and faces Germany in Bern tonight. He has not played for Switzerland since March 2025 against Luxembourg, and a finals place remains uncertain.

Cömert’s excellent second half of LaLiga prompted his recall, as happened with Filip Ugrinic. The 28-year-old midfielder, capped four times, has not featured since November 2024 and has stayed in València after knee pain returned.

Cömert is one of nine Valencia players whose contracts run to 30 June 2026, so without a renewal any World Cup involvement would only cover the opening two weeks. His form has strengthened his case to stay, though Valencia are still weighing centre-back options.

Beyond Cömert, outside possibilities include Guido Rodríguez amid fierce midfield competition with the world champions, and a late opening with Spain for José Gayà. Striker Hugo Duro could also retain faint hope. Under Meriton, Valencia’s World Cup impact has faded since the 2010 triumph of Villa, Silva, Mata and Marchena.
