After Nigeria’s elimination in the 2026 World Cup play-offs, Eric Chelle stunned everyone by accusing DR Congo of resorting to voodoo during the penalty shootout.

Right after the match, which ended in a 4-3 penalty defeat, the Super Eagles’ head coach addressed the media. According to Chelle, a member of the Congolese staff was making strange gestures before each kick:

During the entire shootout, the guy from Congo was doing voodoo. Every single time. That’s why I was upset. I don’t know if it was water or something else, but he was throwing it in the air.
