Manchester City star Erling Haaland has been linked with Real Madrid for a number of years, and periodically, those links return. This summer, Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme claimed he had an agreement to bring Haaland to the club were he to win, but that was quickly denied by his representation, and Florentino Perez came out victorious in the elections.
Nevertheless, the speculation that Haaland could one day join Real Madrid has persisted for some time. The admiration for him at the Santiago Bernabeu is no secret, and Haaland is a fan of Spain and Spanish football in general, often traveling to the country for his holidays.
Haaland was warming up for his crucial clash with Norway against Brazil in the Round of 16 at the World Cup, when his father gave an interview to DAZN. Asked about those links to Real Madrid before the tournament, Alf-Inge Haaland, who has had a significant influence over his son’s career, seemed to intimate that Erling would welcome a move to Los Blancos.
“I don’t want to talk much about elections at other clubs. He is happy at City, he has a long contract… but any player wants to play for Real Madrid,” Marca quote.
As things stand, it is hard to imagine Haaland lining up for Real Madrid, given the star power already in their ranks. In order for Haaland to sign for Real Madrid, it seems likely that at least one of Kylian Mbappe or Vinicius Junior would have to leave the club. Currently, that is not entirely far-fetched with regards to Vinicius, who now has less than a year on his contract, despite both player and club stating they want a new deal. So far there have been no negotiations for the past 18 months over a contract.
