Étienne Vaessen pulled off a remarkable piece of deception in a Dutch league match against Nijmegen, then said it drew on video game sessions with his son. According to L'Équipe, the Groningen goalkeeper explained the inspiration after clips of the incident were shared thousands of times on social media.
With Boy Kemper breaking down the left at the edge of the box, Vaessen advanced, giving the impression he was braced for a cross. Kemper took the bait and shot low, only for the keeper to retreat and gather comfortably.
Vaessen said he often thinks before matches about what he might try. He accepted the gambit could have made him look foolish, and noted it would probably have gone viral anyway.
He said he knows Kemper well, which probably made the video even more enjoyable. At half-time, Kemper told him he had been had and called him an idiot.
A Suriname international with 14 caps, Vaessen could face France at the World Cup this summer. If Suriname beat Bolivia then Iraq in March play-offs, they will be placed in Group I with France, Norway and Senegal. Rayan Cherki and company have been warned if the opposing keeper fancies another surprise.
