ÖFB Bundesliga side FK Austria Wien make history as the first Austrian club in history to reach the Europa Cup quarter-finals. A 3-1 aggregate score-line against Belgian Women’s Super League outfit Anderlecht sees the history-makers through to the next round comfortably.

The last and only time an Austrian based women’s side has reached a quarter-final in Europe was SV Neulengbach in in the 2013/14 season. The Lower-Austrian side eventually lost to Swedish side Tyresö FF in the UWCL.

A crowd of 1911 were in attendance at the Franz-Horr Arena to watch Austria Wien’s victory. An oddly poetic figure as the year 1911 coincidentally was the same year the Austrian club was formed.

Dominating performance from the home side

Wien had the advantage as the game started. A goal from Almedina Šišić in the first leg set the two teams apart with an aggregate score of 1-0.

Austria Wien made their intentions known in the second-leg from early on in the game. USA forward Courtney Strode nearly tapping an early chance home in the 4th minute of play.

Katharina Schiechtl was the first to break the deadlock and put Wien a goal ahead to make it 1-0. Modesta Uka had a little luck to go with her skill and power in the build up, as she managed to knock the ball past three Anderlecht defenders before crossing the ball to Schiechtl. The Austrian No.8 reamined calm on the ball and tapped her strike into the net of Anderlecht ‘keeper Aude Waldbillig.

A wonder strike sealed the victory.

At the 54th minute there was scenes of absolute joy throughout the already loud home fans as USA native Strode fired a shot in goal from 40 yards out. It was a strike of pure quality as the Austrian side sat comfortable with a score-line of 2-0. With a 3 goal lead on aggregate it seemed all but certain that Austria Wien had made history.

“It feels amazing, we worked so hard to get here” Strode confessed in an exclusive interview post match with Her Football Hub. “I saw the ‘keeper was out and off her line and I just thought to myself, OK, go for it” the striker confessed concerning her wonder strike.

A cosmetic consolation

Anderlecht were able to bring the score-line down as their substitute Klara Folkesson, a signing from Swedish side Hammarby managed to grab a consolation goal in the 78th minute.

There was a valiant attempt at a come-back from the Belgian runners-up but Wien held strong as they saw out their historic victory.

What comes next for FK Austria Wien

Stefan Kenesei’s side will face First Vienna away from home in the ÖFB Frauen Bundesliga on 23rd November. The Austrian’s will look to consolidate their 5 point league lead over SKN St. Pölten and continue their unbeaten league season.

Austria Wien’s Europa Cup campaign will see the side next face Slavia Prague in the quarter-final who defeated Young Boys in the round of 16.
