After FC Bayern’s 2-2 draw at Hamburger SV, FCB coach Vincent Kompany criticized the refereeing team. The long stoppage time caused discussions – and led the Beliger to unusually clear words after the final whistle

Kompany was critical of the referee’s performance on Sky and explained his emotional reaction during the match

„If the referee gives 16 minutes of stoppage time(first and second half, editor’s note), then something must have happened in the game. Since I’ve been here, I’ve never spoken out about referees, but when you get that much stoppage time, you realize that it wasn’t just the 22 players who influenced the game, but other people played a role too,“ said Kompany, making it clear

One scene in particular involving Harry Kane caused the Bayern coach a lack of understanding. „What did Harry Kane get the yellow card for? The defender slipped and showed Kane the yellow card,“ explained Kompany. Overall, he was less upset by the result than by the way the game was officiated. „It’s true that I was emotional, simply because clear and simple situations were made complicated by the referee.“

Kompany points out Bayern’s burden

Kompany also put his reaction in context with the current pressure on his team. „The boys have played seven games in 20 days,“ said the Bayern coach, pointing out that his team had not lost despite the circumstances: „We drew today, we didn’t lose, but it’s a shame.“

Away from the refereeing issue, Kompany nevertheless had words of praise for the opposition and the character of the game. „Football is always complicated. There are no easy games. We knew it was going to be a tough away game,“ he explained. HSV had played to their strengths consistently. „HSV always play good crosses, the centre-back was in a good position and scored the goal.“

Despite all the criticism, Kompany spoke of an intense evening of soccer. „It was a good game for the Bundesliga with a lot of intensity,“ said the 39-year-old, but couldn’t resist another dig at the match officials. „But what can I say? You saw it for yourself. There were 16 minutes of stoppage time in total, and it could have been 20 to 25 minutes.“
