We asked ‘Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey’ to give us his match ratings and player comments after Everton 1 Newcastle 4.
Back to winning ways on the road, long overdue.
This season has ebbed and flowed, we have played well and ended up with nothing, at other times, we have been dominant, whilst on occasion, have been pretty poor.
Saturday was a huge win, make no mistake, but it’s often a case of those fine margins that sometimes go for you, which they did yesterday because in between our opening goal and our second, Everton dominated possession but couldn’t find a way through.
If we’d got a second at West Ham, Brentford or Marseilles, whose to say we wouldn’t have gone on to win those games?
Ramsdale 7
Pretty quiet evening for Aaron, such a shame he conceded. His distribution was good.
Hall 9
Very good performance from young Lewis, who in Ndiaye, had a tricky opponent to chaperone.
Lewis offers so much. Great at defending, very mobile, made some great forward runs in support of Barnes. What a cross for Thiaw’s second and our fourth.
Burn 8
Solid as a rock and dependable as ever, although he was caught out when we thought Thierno Barry had scored which would have been a tad embarrassing for BDB.
Thiaw 9
Two great headers and a stellar performance from our German central defender. A great signing from Milan.
Livramento 8
Cut and paste what I’ve said about Lewis Hall, minus the assist and up against Grealish, not Ndiaye, and supporting Elanga, not Barnes.
Miley 9
Great to see young Lewis get on the score sheet, Pickford will not enjoy seeing the replays of Miley’s goal.
Before that, Lewis had provided the assist for our opener, a brilliant corner whipped into the danger area and so difficult to defend.
This lad is so understated, very calm on the ball, does the simple stuff so well.
Guimaraes 8
Bruno played well, as usual.
Always looking to be involved and playing some lovely through balls today, we don’t always see that.
Put in the hard yards to stifle Dewsbury-Hall.
Joelinton 7
Poor in the first half with some heavy touches and errant passes, but much better in the second, especially when he looked to move the ball forward instead of sideways or backwards.
Barnes 7
A quiet afternoon for Harvey after hitting four goals in his last three appearances.
Always gets a chance and it’s a pity he couldn’t have converted that one on one with Pickford in the second half.
Woltemade 8
Great all round play, holds the ball up and difficult to dispossess.
Should have scored again in the second half but let’s concentrate on the one he got. Wor Nick doesn’t score ordinary goals does he? A quite sumptuous lob over the hapless Mackem to make it 3-0 on the stroke of half time.
I can’t wait to see how Woltemade links up with Wissa when he finally shakes off his injury.
Elanga 8
Will the real Tony Elanga please show yourself?
I think he might have done today.
Low on confidence after an indifferent start to his time at Gallowgate (and that’s if you’re being generous). Involved in all three goals before the break.
Showed great pace in the first minute to get the shot away which Pickford turned round the post for the corner that led to Thiaw’s opener. He was at it again in the build up to Miley’s goal, beating Dewsbury-Hall and although his cross was blocked, events took their course with Miley eventually firing home our second.
For the third, he got the assist, bustling past the hapless Iroegbunam to latch onto Livramento’s through ball before feeding Woltemade with a great pass.
I hope this marks a real turning point for the Swede.
SUBS
Willock 7
Difficult to judge because the game was won with thousands of empty seats on display when little Joe entered the fray, but I thought he did well, as was the case on the Cote d’Azur midweek.
Ramsey 7
Slightly less effective than Willock but looks willing.
Would have loved to see him convert that chance he had.
Schar N/A
Not on long enough to judge.
Not on long enough to judge.
Gordon N/A
Not on long enough to judge. Needs to lose that hairband though.
