Everton suffered a 2-0 loss in the League Cup after a disjointed display against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Toffees were sent packing from the competition.

Everton boss David Moyes made seven changes from the side that lost to Liverpool over the weekend in the Merseyside derby, and the lack of cohesion showed.

Moyes gave Everton’s £40 million signing Tyler Dibling his first start following his big-money move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton fans were hopeful that the 19-year-old would show why the Toffees paid so much for his services. Unfortunately, they will have to be patient after a muted outing.

Lining up on the right side of Everton’s attack, Dibling struggled to make a telling impact on the tie.

The Everton star won only 4/12 ground duels, didn’t win any of his two aerial battles, lost possession eight times, and completed only 2/6 dribbles.

Moyes has given Dibling cameos here and there, but this was his first start, and he failed to grab the opportunity following a subdued performance.

What Everton fans must remember is that Dibling, who earns £50k per week, is not the finished article, and nor was he ever expected to be.

At 19, the winger is still raw and learning the pace and physical demands of top-level football.

He won’t transform into a game-changer overnight, and that is perfectly natural for a player at this stage of his development.

Rather than piling on pressure, the club and supporters must nurture his obvious talent and give him the time he needs to adapt.

For now, Iliman Ndiaye will continue to hold the starting berth, and rightly so, given his experience, end product, and consistency.

However, if the Toffees remain patient, Dibling has the potential to grow into a key player, one who could ultimately repay the faith placed in him.
