Football has a funny way of coming full circle. 10 years after leaving Goodison Park for the bright lights of Manchester, John Stones is heavily linked with a stunning return to Everton. It’s a proper bombshell. The 32-year-old ball-playing defender is officially a free agent after a trophy-laden decade at Manchester City. 19 major honours, including six Premier League titles. Not a bad shift, that.
A report from Sportsboom, via Give Me Sport, reveals that the Everton hierarchy is pushing aggressively behind the scenes. They are currently locked in advanced talks. It’s an ambitious move. Serious interest is pouring in from elite Serie A clubs, but the Toffees are surprisingly confident they can outbid and out-persuade the Italian suitors.
Right now, Stones is away with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup. His focus is there. Yet, Everton want this wrapped up quickly. Getting his signature before the tournament ends would be a massive statement.

David Moyes needs leadership. A sluggish 13th-place finish last season exposed a fragile backline, and his former prodigy fits the bill perfectly. No transfer fee helps. Zero adaptation time is needed, either, given his Premier League pedigree. He’d transform how the team builds from the back. But it’s a massive gamble.
His ball-playing capability would absolutely transform the buildup play from deep positions. However, look at the medical history. His last two campaigns at City were plagued by persistent fitness issues. The Etihad style allows a player to coast through games in second gear. Everton? Not a chance. Moyes demands robust, ultra-reliable figures who can grind out 40 gruelling matches a season. If Stones breaks down while sitting on a massive wage package, it cripples the club financially.
Can the medical staff manage his minutes with extreme precision? If yes, it’s a masterstroke. If no, it’s an expensive disaster.
