Everton Maceió has turned heads in Brazil with his calm penalties this season, and the Portuguesa forward says Flamengo’s Jorginho is a key influence on his technique.
“If I strike it right, it is very hard to save. It is like Jorginho and Neymar’s penalties. Everyone knows it. But how many have they taken and kept scoring? A lot, forget it,” said Everton Maceió, speaking to Cartolouco.
The striker has been surprising goalkeepers by taking spot-kicks with virtually no run-up. Hugo Souza, formerly of Flamengo and now at Corinthians, was among those beaten by his recent efforts.
Jorginho is regarded as one of Brazil’s leading penalty specialists. The Italy international by nationality uses his trademark hop before shooting, and has converted eight penalties for Flamengo with a 100% record.
While Maceió looks up to Jorginho, Flamengo are back in action on Sunday, 22, against Corinthians in the eighth round of the Brasileirão. Kick-off is 20:30, Brasília time, at the Neo Química Arena.
