Match preview

Following their consecutive victories over Newcastle United and Burnley, Everton suffered a 2-0 defeat to leaders Arsenal last time out in the Premier League.

The Toffees showed admirable resilience for much of the contest, but their resistance was ultimately broken by two late goals that left them empty-handed.

Viktor Gyökeres opened the scoring in the 89th minute before 16-year-old Max Dowman sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.

Everton have lost just one of their last eight Premier League home games against Chelsea (W5 D2), going down 1-0 in August 2022.

Chelsea were thrashed 3-0 at home by Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League tie on Wednesday. The Blues lost by a whopping score of 8-2 on aggregate.

Liam Rosenior’s side also suffered defeat in their last Premier League outing, losing 1-0 to Newcastle.

Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game, finishing off a quick counter-attack to give the Magpies an early lead.

The Blues will be keen to return to winning ways at Everton to bolster their top-four hopes.

Team news

Jack Grealish and Carlos Alcaraz are on the sidelines for the host, while Chelsea loanee Tyrique George is ineligible to face his parent club.

Trevoh Chalobah was stretched off with an ankle injury in the midweek defeat to PSG.

He joins Reece James, Filip Jorgensen and Levi Colwill in the Blues’ infirmary, while Malo Gusto and Benoit Badiashile will be assessed ahead of kickoff.

Predicted line-ups

Everton (4-2-3-1): Pickford, O’Brien, Keane, Tarkowski, Mykolenko, Garner, Gueye, Armstrong, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndiaye, Barry.

Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Sanchez, Acheampong, Sarr, Fofana, Cucurella, Caicedo, Santos, Palmer, Fernandez, Garnacho, Joao Pedro.

Prediction: Everton 1-2 Chelsea.
