Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilón departed Tottenham after his contract with Spurs expired. Now, the Daily Mail has reported that Premier League clubs like West Ham United and Everton are back in the race for the 28-year-old left-back on a free transfer.

The Spaniard performed really well in the La Liga, but failed to adapt to the Premier League during his stints with Brentford, Tottenham and Manchester United. The 28-year-old will be looking for an opportunity in a top club to get his career back on track, and Everton, who need strength in defence, can turn out to be one of the best clubs to give him that platform.

Sergio Reguilón’s qualities and cons:

He is a modern attacking left-back who has pace, dribbling skills, and a willingness to get forward. The Spaniard excels at carrying the ball and making runs into the opposition box, offering a significant attacking threat from the left flank. His passing accuracy is decent, and he is a proactive defender, preferring to press high and win the ball back rather than sitting deep.

However, Reguilón does have some drawbacks. His aggressive style often makes him over-commit and get caught out of position defensively. The Spaniard isn’t particularly strong in the air, which could be a vulnerability, especially in the Premier League. His crossing accuracy, while not bad, isn’t exceptional. The 28-year-old has also faced injury concerns in recent seasons, missing significant time.

Everton could certainly benefit from a player with Reguilón’s attacking attributes at left-back, especially given Vitalii Mykolenko’s recent injury concerns and the need for squad depth. His ability to get forward and create chances would add another dimension to their attack, complementing the existing options like Iliman Ndiaye and the improving Vitalii Mykolenko.

A fit and firing Reguilón would provide competition and allow for tactical flexibility. Meanwhile, reports reveal that the Toffees are also contemplating a sale of Ndiaye, and are going to face serious competition to renew the firing, Jack Grealish.

Would he be a good free signing for David Moyes’ Everton?

Considering Reguilón’s contract situation, signing him on a free transfer would be a sensible move for Everton, assuming he can maintain fitness. He offers Premier League experience and a skill set that could add value to the squad.

While there are some question marks over his defensive consistency and aerial ability, the potential upside of acquiring an attacking full-back with his quality on a free transfer outweighs the risks. He could prove a shrewd acquisition for Moyes as he builds his squad at Goodison Park.
