Everton are set to miss out on Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus in January (h/t journalist Rob Dorsett).
They desperately need a new centre-forward with Beto and Thierno Barry failing to impress.
Unfortunately, Everton will not be able to sign Jesus, who is recovering from an injury setback.
Jesus would be a terrific addition to Everton’s squad, but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has said he won’t be moving.
The Merseyside outfit would have struggled to afford him £331,250 per week wages, but could have used the formula that helped them land Jack Grealish.
The inability to sign Jesus leaves the Toffees with Ivan Toney and Joshua Zirkzee on their transfer shortlist.
With those two as the only options, signing Toney is a no-brainer for the Toffees in the winter.
The 29-year-old has scored 41 goals in 59 appearances for Al-Ahli since joining from Brentford in a £40 million deal in 2024.
He bagged 20 goals in the Premier League in 2022/23. Toney should be the top target ahead of Zirkzee, who has struggled with Manchester United.
Zirkzee scored just 11 Serie A goals in his best season. The Englishman is clearly the better marksman and should be top of Everton’s winter shopping list.
However, the finances involved could scupper the deal. He is on astronomical wages in Saudi Arabia, and it could prove difficult to bring him to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
