Vivianne Miedema’s early effort for the visitors was cancelled out by a Kelly Gago finish just before half-time. Khadija Shaw then went on to net the decisive winning goal in the second half.
It was Shaw who threatened the Everton goal from close range early in the game, but home keeper Emily Ramsey made a perfect stop to deny her.
Miedema then got the ball into the box, but was unable to convert it into anything before Martina Fernández went close at the other end. Toni Payne then had another shot for Everton, but the ball went just wide of the net before Ornella Vignola’s powerful strike was caught by Ayaka Yamashita.
Miedema opened the scoring for Manchester City in the 21st minute. Iman Beney created the perfect pass and slid the ball to Miedema, who put it into the back of the net.
Everton responded and Payne once again got her foot to the ball as Yamashita came out of her goal. It was a good opportunity, but the ball went just wide of the net.
The Toffees then had an even better chance when Ruby Mace swung the ball in from a corner. Gago made perfect contact with her head but her effort was brilliantly saved by Yamashita.
Gago got Everton back in the game just before the interval. Payne made an exceptional run down the right and fed the ball to Gago, who in-turn, managed to flick it into the bottom corner of the net.
Roles were then reversed as Gago flicked the ball across the goal to find Payne, but Yamashita managed to catch it to deny The Toffees.
In the 54th minute, Shaw headed the ball into the back of the net to put Manchester City into the lead once again.
Everton pushed hard to level for a second time. Gago once again tried her luck at goal, but failed to significantly trouble Yamashita before Vignola produced a fanastic turn and a powerful shot, however, the ball narrowly bounced off the inside of the post as Everton’s frustrations continued.
Yamashita then made an impactful save to deny Hikaru Kitagawa. Katie Robinson cut the ball back for the Japanese international, who tried to slot into the bottom corner, but the keeper came out and smothered the danger.
This afternoon’s result moves Manchester City into pole position in the Barclays Women’s Super League table while Everton are tenth.
