Former Juventus defender Gianluca Marocchi feels that “superficial” defending is the reason Inter Milan are chasing Napoli in the Serie A table.
Marocchi gave his thoughts on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInter1908.
At the moment, Inter are not all that far behind Napoli in the Serie A table.
Just four points separate the Nerazzurri from the league leaders. That is hardly a huge gap to make up with more than two thirds of the season to go.
However, it is a difference of more than one result between the two sides.
And that is a testament to the fact that Napoli have been far more consistent than Inter.
While the Nerazzurri have put in some very convincing performances that would suggest they are more than capable of keeping up, they have struggled to put together a string of results.
From Napoli, it’s been exactly the opposite. The Partenopei have been relentless at turning performances into results each weekend in Serie A.
Last season, Inter were not just the strongest team in Serie A. They were also the most ruthless.
This time around, it seems clear that, even if Inter are able to defend their title in the end, they will have to work for it.
The Nerazzurri have given few signs that they will be able to leave the pack in their dust like last time around.
And, particularly after their convincing victory over AC Milan this week, Napoli have given few signs that they will let them.
“The problem for me is that Inter have been superficial,” former Juventus midfielder Marocchi said.
“They could be on 25 points. But they’re not, because compared to last season the defending has been superficial.”
He also argued that “Frattesi and Zielinski would be starters for all nineteen other teams in the league.”
“Frattesi scores two goals, but then he could go right back down to the bench,” Marocchi suggested.
