Don Goodman has given his verdict on whether Huddersfield Town striker Dion Charles could leave the club in January.

Pundit Don Goodman believes out-of-favour Huddersfield Town striker Dion Charles could leave the club in the January transfer window.

Charles joined Huddersfield from League One promotion rivals Bolton Wanderers in January for an initial fee of £750,000, with further bonuses included in the deal, and having scored 57 goals in 149 games for the Trotters during a prolific spell in Lancashire, his signing looked to be a big coup for the club.

However, Charles failed to score in 18 appearances for the Terriers in the second half of last season as they missed out on the play-offs, and the wait for his first goal has continued into the new campaign.

With Joe Taylor and Bojan Radulovic already at the club, Town further strengthened their forward line this summer with the permanent addition of Alfie May from Birmingham City, while they also signed Zepiqueno Redmond on loan from Aston Villa on deadline day, and those new arrivals have pushed Charles down the pecking order.

Charles has made just three substitute appearances in the league this season, and he has been left out of the matchday squad for the last four games against Stevenage, Barnsley, Peterborough United and Bradford City, which has raised serious question marks about his future at the Accu Stadium.

Last month, Huddersfield manager Lee Grant insisted that he had full confidence that Charles would rediscover his goalscoring form, but as his exile from the squad continues, a January exit could be on the cards for the Northern Ireland international.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman admitted that it has not worked out for Charles at Huddersfield since his big-money move from Bolton, and he claimed that his departure in January could be the right move for all parties.

"It just feels like it's been a bit of a disastrous move for Dion Charles leaving Bolton for Huddersfield," Goodman said.

"I'm sure the project was sold to him, which is a good one, and it's not dissimilar to Bolton's.

"However, he's played 23 games now, with a lot of those coming from the bench, and he hasn't mustered a goal.

"They had a massive game last weekend against Bradford City, and he wasn't even a substitute.

"He's only come off the bench in three League One games and accumulated only 25 minutes of League One football all season, so the writing is on the wall.

"For him, at the age of 29, undoubtedly he will want to be playing week in, week out.

"It may be that it would suit all parties if he went somewhere he was playing on a regular basis, even if he goes out on loan in January."

Huddersfield Town will have big Dion Charles frustration as Lee Grant snub continues

Given his prolific record at Bolton, the signing of Charles was certainly an eye-catching one for Huddersfield, and with Taylor also joining the club in January for a fee of more than £3 million, it looked to be a partnership that could fire the Terriers to promotion.

However, over nine months on from his arrival at the Accu Stadium, Charles is still yet to open his account for Town, and while he has been given public backing from his manager, the fact he has been left out of the matchday squad on numerous occasions this season suggests Grant's patience with the 29-year-old is running out.

With Taylor, May, Radulovic and Redmond all ahead of him in the pecking order, it is difficult to disagree with Goodman that Charles' exit in January is inevitable, and Huddersfield may be set to make a big loss on the striker if they sell him permanently.
