Luka Modric's effect on Swansea City isn't predicted to be enough to get them challenging for a Premier League return next season.

Arguably the most weird and wonderful story of the 2024/25 second tier season was that of the Croatian's investment in the Welsh side. It was revealed by Fabrizio Romano that he would become a minority owner of the club - he is reported to own five per cent of it, as per The Athletic.

It isn't expected that the midfielder will play much of a role in the day-to-day operations at the Swansea.com Stadium, but early-summer signing Zeidane Inoussa did reveal that his decision to join the club was helped by talks with Modric.

The plan was for him to stay as a Real Madrid player. Unfortunately for the former Ballon d'Or winner, that's not how things panned out. Real decided not to offer him a new deal, leaving him as a free agent. Now he is set to buy a property in Swansea.

Now this doesn't mean that he's going to be playing under Alan Sheehan next summer. A footballing role at boardroom level has been earmarked for him later down the line, but he still wants to play at the top level if he can, according to his national team boss.

Luka Modric's Swansea City boost hopes downplayed

If he were to join the Swans for the next campaign, that would surely boost their hopes of getting back to the English first division after six seasons without top flight football.

But the Croatian's influence alone, off the pitch, isn't going to be enough to boost City up towards the top end of the Championship, according to Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, the former striker said: "I'm not so sure how Luka Modric moving to Swansea, to the area, is going to help them on the football pitch, in reality. At this moment, until all the transfer business is done, from all of the Championship clubs, it's very, very hard to think that Swansea will be challenging at the top end.

"They had a strong finish, there's no doubt about it, but I think there will be stronger candidates than Swansea to finish in the top six or top 10 next season."

Luka Modric's positive effects on Swansea City should be felt down the road

It's going to be hard for the 39-year-old to be able to have a proper meaningful effect on the club until he hangs up his boots, or he joins them as a player.

We have seen the massively beneficial work that big names like him in the world of sports can have on clubs. Tom Brady, former NFL quarterback and arguably the greatest to ever play his sport, has been brilliant for Birmingham City despite having a very small share in the club.

His association with them will have helped them to bring in the huge revenues that are projected to allow them to compete, financially, with clubs who have the benefit of parachute payments from the Premier League.
