The 20-year-old was a regular for Sheffield United last season
Sydie Peck enjoyed a standout campaign for Sheffield United last season.
The 20-year-old took advantage of Ollie Arblaster’s season-ending knee injury to establish himself in the Blades’ first team, making 42 Championship appearances en route to the play-off final.
Peck has been the subject of transfer interest this summer, with West Ham United linked with a move for his services, but nothing has materialised at this stage.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder, Lee Hendrie, believes that there will naturally be a lot of talk around the young talent’s future this summer, but Sheffield United must do everything they can to keep hold of him.
“Sydie Peck was excellent last season and really stepped up to the challenge,” stated Hendrie. “Ollie Arblaster was obviously injured, and he got this opportunity which he grasped brilliantly.
“I was really impressed with him, I like his all-round game, he's got a bit of everything, he plays with that bite. He's got a real zip about his play and proper drive, which I think is a great attribute to have.
“When you have players like that who've got a little bit of everything, you're always going to attract any clubs and that's what he's done. He's earned that attraction from the way he's taken his place and shown that he's capable of stepping up to the level.
“Sheffield United won't want to get rid of him. I don't think Arblaster’s quite ready for the start of the season. Peck has been a big player for them, so the interest will no doubt be there.
“I'm sure there will be some late moves for a lot of players in the Championship/EFL, and I've got no doubt he'll be one of them because he's showed that he's got real quality last season.”
After such a brilliant breakthrough campaign, the temptation to make a big move to the Premier League will naturally be burning away at such a young midfielder, especially when there are parties reportedly interested in making that happen.
However, it could suit the 20-year-old better in the long term to remain at Bramall Lane for another season at least.
If the midfielder did switch to a Premier League outfit such as West Ham, playing time wouldn’t be guaranteed, and it could result in Peck spending a large portion of the season on the bench.
This isn’t what he needs at this point in his development, so staying in a Sheffield United side that will likely compete for the Championship title could be the better option.
He would continue to hone his trade and perhaps secure himself an even bigger transfer for next summer.
