The 29-year-old exited Turf Moor this summer after five years following the expiration of his contract and has attracted the attention of numerous clubs.

West Ham United, Celtic and Ipswich Town have all been credited with an interest in the midfielder, but it was the Foxes who made the first move with a substantial contract proposal, as per FourFourTwo.

Last season saw Brownhill reach his peak performance as a football player, netting 18 times and providing six assists in 42 Championship appearances.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder, Lee Hendrie, believes that the former Claret would be an excellent addition for Leicester City.

“I think Josh Brownhill would be a fantastic signing for Leicester,” stated Hendrie. “I think you just have to look at the numbers that he put up in the Championship and it does speak volumes.

“I think when a top club is sort of sniffing around, you know the calibre of player that you're bringing in.

“Josh is a strong leader as well, and you’d think it's a massive signing for them.

“I think on the whole, where they're at during this moment in time, losing a few big players, you need someone who's going to come in and be a bit of a leader in the dressing room.

“With players like Jamie Vardy and Conor Coady leaving the club, it’s important to replace that. I think this would be a real big coup for Leicester City.”

Josh Brownhill would be a wise signing for Marti Cifuentes

Leicester City are likely to be one of the clubs fighting for promotion back to the Premier League next term alongside Sheffield United, Southampton and Ipswich Town.

With the competition so stiff, adding any extra quality at this stage in the window could prove to be crucial across 46 games.

Brownhill was one of the Championship’s standout performers last term and would therefore be a low-risk, high-reward addition due to the fact that he is a free agent.

His output from midfield and recent experience of success in the second-tier would prove extremely valuable for Marti Cifuentes’s side, whilst also giving the Foxes another strong leader in the dressing room.

It’s rare for a player who has such guaranteed quality in the Championship to be available on a free transfer and Leicester City must take advantage of this.
