Carlton Palmer tells FLW whether he believes the Black Cats should make the striker's deal at the Stadium of Light a permanent one.

Wilson Isidor has had a superb start to life at Sunderland, and after another goal in red-and-white, Carlton Palmer has had his say on whether he believes that the club should enact the buy option in the striker's loan deal.

The 24-year-old's winning strike against Hull City on Sunday was his third since making the move to the Stadium of Light from Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg on loan in the summer, after goals against Derby County and Watford.

While it was a quiet start in his first three sub appearances, Isidor has been excellent following his move to the starting XI at the end of September, and he has quickly bedded in as yet another tremendous signing by Regis Le Bris.

Nevertheless, it is still very early days in his Sunderland career, and although it can be seen as a near certainty that the Black Cats will turn the striker's loan into a permanent transfer, the next few months could be crucial to that decision.

Carlton Palmer makes Isidor verdict

Isidor was brought to the north-east of England by Le Bris after the current Black Cats boss coached him during his youth career at Rennes in France.

While he arrived as a relatively unknown entity, he has excelled in this young Sunderland team, and he is currently one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, former England and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton gave his views on the striker's start to life in red-and-white and whether the 24-year-old should become a permanent member of the squad once his loan comes to an end.

"He's been in outstanding form, and in seven Championship games so far, he’s scored three goals," he started. "Regis Le Bris has worked with him before, so he knows him very well. They've got him on a season-long loan, and since they lost Ross Stewart, they've missed somebody who can score goals for them.

"He's on a season-long loan, so there's nothing to rush. The manager had a little bit of insight into what Wilson can do, he's had an immediate impact and that's what you want to do when you make a loan signing.

"I don't think Sunderland should look to activate that buy clause yet, they do have that option to buy him, and I always say when you take a player on loan you should take him with a view that you've got to buy him because if the player does well on loan, you don't want to then be haggling and negotiating at the end of that to get him signed.

"So, when you have a deal in place that you can sign him then it makes life easier. So, it's early days I think he's been outstanding so far, and Sunderland have been outstanding so far."

Palmer continued to tell FLW: "It helps that the manager’s worked with him before, he knows a lot about him. So, we'll have to wait and see how the season unfolds. I don't think there's any rush for them to make that deal permanent yet.

"But if he continues this great form and Sunderland continue in that vein, then of course it is an option for him. But also, Sunderland will be having one eye on the fact that, if they continue the way they are, they’re going to be promoted to the Premier League and if they get promoted to the Premier League, will he be one of those players who can play in the Premier League?

"So there is a lot of factors that have to be taken into consideration, but he's doing well at the moment, and it's a case of let's wait and see."

Sunderland must take up the option on Isidor's deal

While Palmer has noted that time must be taken to decide on Isidor's future, it is clear from his first few appearances in a Sunderland shirt that he is a player that will be worth taking a risk on for the future.

At just 24, he has a long career ahead of him, and with the Black Cats' ambitions of reaching the Premier League, he could be someone that the team is built around in the years to come.

The coming weeks and months will be crucial to get a true reading into Isidor's true ability, and while he is in very good form currently, he must continue to keep showing the same level throughout the entire season to keep his team in the hunt for promotion.

Nevertheless, his goal against Hull truly captured what Isidor is all about, and more solo efforts like that will only serve Sunderland well as they look to continue their impressive start to the Championship campaign.
