Speaking exclusively with FLW, Don Goodman has provided his thoughts on Jack Wilshere's potential appointment at Luton Town.
Don Goodman has said that he can understand why Luton Town are being linked with a move for Jack Wilshere as their new manager following the sacking of Matt Bloomfield.
Luton Town have been one of the most capricious and volatile clubs in the English Football League for the past decade or so, and that doesn't seem likely to change this season.
As recently as 2014, the Bedfordshire-based outfit was playing its football in the fifth tier of English football, but a steady upwards trajectory for the next ten years saw them achieve promotion to the Premier League for the first time.
Since their Premier League campaign less than two years ago, the Hatters suffered back-to-back relegations from the top-flight and then the Championship, meaning this season they are playing their football in the third tier for the first time since the 2018/19 season.
Former Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield oversaw the club's relegation from the Championship last season and was kept in charge of their return to League One, but things haven't exactly gone to plan for the Hatters.
Sitting in 11th place after 11 matches, with one win in their last five league games, Bloomfield has been sacked, and Luton are on the lookout for a new manager to take the reins, with former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere having been linked with the role.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has provided his opinion on whether he thinks Jack Wilshere will be a good fit for the Luton job.
Goodman said, "Football is full of surprises, there is no doubt about that, and I think one of the big ones this season, although not quite as radical as Sheffield United's start in the Championship, has been Luton's poor start in League One.
"It's enhanced really because it is League One. We all expected Luton Town would be right at the very top under Matt Bloomfield this season, but it hasn't worked out that way; it's cost Matt Bloomfield his job.
"Jack Wilshere got a little taste for being in charge of the final couple of games last season, where I think he got a draw and a win in his two games in charge of Norwich after Johannes Hoff Thorup left.
"It's a small sample size, but why not? I think he's served a good bit of an apprenticeship behind the scenes at Norwich, and having those couple of games, and I can understand why he would be linked."
Wilshere, 33, made 34 appearances for England before persistent injuries ended his playing career early, but the former Arsenal midfielder has not given up the sport just yet, having moved straight into coaching upon his retirement in 2023.
He joined Norwich City's coaching squad in October 2024, having previously worked with Arsenal's Under-18s, and following the departure of Johannes Hoff Thorup, Wilshere took interim charge for the final two games of last season, drawing away to Middlesbrough and defeating Cardiff City 2-0 at home.
According to The Sun, Wilshere turned down the opportunity to manage Arsenal’s Under-21s in August of this year, reportedly keen to take his first permanent role in senior management, with Luton a possible fit.
Wilshere, who is not far from Luton in nearby Stevenage, is not the only name being linked with the Hatters' role.
Exclusively informed by Football League World, both Leyton Orient's Richie Wellens and former Notts County and Swansea City boss Luke Williams are also being spoken about as contenders.
According to Luton Today, Wellens has overtaken Wilshere in the race for the role, but no significant news as to who will be taking the job has been released as yet.
Wilshere is the most unknown quantity out of the lot, having only managed two senior professional games, and whether the Hatters will take such a gamble at this stage, given their early struggles, remains to be seen.
