Victor Munoz to Liverpool, Why Surprise Deal Makes Sense

Liverpool have moved sharply, decisively and, perhaps most importantly, quietly.

Victor Munoz was not the name dominating transfer conversations. He was not the winger repeatedly linked with Anfield. Yet after Liverpool triggered his Osasuna release clause, the 22-year-old is now set to become Andoni Iraola’s first signing as Liverpool head coach.

For supporters suddenly searching his name, the question is obvious. Who exactly is Munoz, and why have Liverpool acted now?

Munoz Brings Pace and Directness

Munoz arrives with a growing reputation in Spain after an impressive season with Osasuna. He scored seven goals and provided five assists, form strong enough to earn him a senior Spain call-up.

His debut could hardly have gone much better, scoring against Serbia in March. He was then included in Luis De la Fuente’s World Cup squad, further underlining how quickly his stock has risen.

La Liga expert Phil Minshull summed up the excitement around him neatly.

“He is an outstanding young talent,” Minshull said. “He’s one of the pearls of Spanish football.

That phrase matters. Liverpool are not buying finished certainty here. They are buying acceleration, aggression and potential before the price becomes absurd.

Wide Profile Fits Liverpool’s Needs

Munoz is 5ft 8in, right-footed and capable of operating from either flank. That flexibility will matter in an Iraola system likely to demand speed, work rate and constant one-v-one threat.

“He’s a very strong, right-footed attacking winger,” he said of the diminutive 5 foot 8 inch attacker. “He can play both sides. He’s very robust. Very physical. He challenges defenders.

“He does take on defenders, and he provides all sorts of challenges for them pulling players in his direction and opening up space for the other forwards.”

This is the core appeal. Liverpool have needed more natural chaos out wide, players willing to attack full-backs rather than recycle possession. Munoz offers that profile.

“He can play either side of the park and that makes him a valuable asset depending on the resources of the rest of the team.

“Also, he’s always tracking back and he’s a strong tackler so he’s supporting the defenders as well. There’s no question marks over his work rate.”

That last line will resonate. Talent matters, but Liverpool’s next phase requires wide players who press, recover and compete.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Osasuna Path

Munoz’s route has been unusual. Born in Barcelona, he spent time at La Masia between the ages of seven and 14 before leaving for Damm. From there, he joined Real Madrid, eventually making his senior debut in a Clasico against Barcelona in May 2025, replacing Vinicius Junior.

His permanent move to Osasuna gave him the platform he needed. Last season, he started 31 of their 38 league games, scoring six and assisting twice in La Liga.

That tells Liverpool something important. Munoz is not only a prospect from academy mythology. He has already handled senior football, weekly responsibility and the physical demands of a major European league.

Liverpool Take Calculated Gamble

There are fair questions over his creativity, and he is not arriving as a guaranteed starter. Yet reports describing him as “pacy, skilful and energetic” fit exactly with what Liverpool have lacked at times.

This feels like a market move built on timing. Newcastle thought they were close. Liverpool saw value, acted quickly and landed a winger whose ceiling may rise sharply if the World Cup gives him another stage.

Munoz may not have been the name supporters expected. That does not make him a strange signing. It may make him a very Liverpool one.
