Rob Edwards was plotting Wolves' next transfer moves on Wednesday evening, yet by the time most had gone to bed his tenure had effectively ended. According to ExpressAndStar.com, he had no idea a change was coming.

While the 43-year-old was on holiday abroad, Nathan Shi had asked Jorge Mendes and his deputy Valdir Cardoso to negotiate for Cesar Peixoto to take over.

Edwards first learned of the Peixoto push via social media reports, which were initially denied, before Wolves chiefs phoned on Thursday morning to dismiss him.

The decision blindsided many, with senior staff unaware until it was public. Edwards fronted club media around the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez this week, including a podcast and an appearance in Jimenez’s announcement video on Tuesday night.

Edwards helped Andre sign a new deal and was central to Trippier joining, with the defender praising him in a club interview this week. He and sporting director Matt Jackson had been aligned on the rest of the window.

There is said to be bemusement inside the club at the timing and the handling, with anger in some quarters over transparency. No one, including figures at the top, saw it coming.

Mendes had pushed alternatives earlier in the season and the chairman had weighed options, yet Edwards had been reassured and was expected to continue. Wolves are now set to back an unproven Mendes client, leaving fresh uncertainty.
