France endured a torrid start to the World Cup third-place play-off in Miami, falling behind inside three minutes before Ezri Konsa made it 2-0 on 18.
Declan Rice opened the scoring with a clinical strike after three minutes.
The second arrived from a Rice corner, with Konsa rising in front of Adrien Rabiot to guide a cross header into Mike Maignan’s side netting.
Maignan initially stepped off his line, then retreated, leaving himself too deep to intervene and stuck on his goal-line.
Konsa, 28, duly doubled England’s advantage inside the opening 20 minutes.
