FA moves Community Shield from Wembley to Principality Stadium | OneFootball

The Football Association has confirmed that this year’s Community Shield will be staged away from its traditional home, with the curtain-raiser set to take place at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

The annual clash between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners is typically held at Wembley Stadium a week before the first official game of the season.

However, due to alterations to the 2026/27 football calendar, next season’s Premier League campaign will begin over the weekend of August 22/23.

Wembley Stadium is unavailable the previous weekend due to pre-planned music concerts. Among them are five consecutive shows from The Weeknd.

The Canadian singer is part of a wider summer calendar that also includes major acts such as Harry Styles, My Chemical Romance, Bruno Mars and Bon Jovi.

The decision underlines a growing reality in modern stadium economics.

Blockbuster concerts often generate significantly greater revenue than domestic football fixtures, particularly during the off-season.

Wembley, like many elite venues, has increasingly leaned into its status as a multi-purpose arena, even if it occasionally forces marquee football events to relocate.

Cardiff’s Principality Stadium is no stranger to the occasion, having hosted the Community Shield six times between 2001 and 2006 while the new Wembley was under construction.

It is also set to stage the opening match of the UEFA European Championship in 2028, further reiterating its standing as one of the UK’s premier venues.

Since Wembley reopened in 2007, the fixture has only been moved twice, most recently in 2022.

This year’s edition, scheduled for August 16, will deliver a high-profile domestic clash.

Arsenal currently lead the Premier League title race, while Manchester City remain in contention across competitions.

There is a strong possibility they will face off again after City beat the Gunners to claim the League Cup.

If Arsenal complete a domestic double, the Shield will pit them against the league runners-up, a position currently held by Man City.
