Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring for Spain against Belgium in the World Cup 2026 quarter-final on Friday. L'Équipe reports that he was preferred to Pedri from the start.
On the right, Pedro Porro combined with Lamine Yamal, whose low cross found Dani Olmo. Thibaut Courtois saved Olmo’s effort, the rebound fell to Ruiz who fired in right-footed from close range under the bar, with Timothy Castagne unable to divert it on the line.

The goal arrived in the 30th minute.
It was only Ruiz’s second start of the tournament, the PSG midfielder having otherwise been among the substitutes apart from the goalless opener against Cape Verde.
At 30, the double reigning European champion vindicated Luis de la Fuente’s trust.
