Fabrizio Romano clarifies Barcelona links with former Bayern Munich player | OneFootball

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Barcelona will be without the services of Frenkie de Jong for several months after he injured his knee during the 2026 World Cup. The Dutch midfielder has opted against surgery, but even so, his conservative treatment approach will mean that he’s out for some time, which is a major blow for the Catalans.

On the back of this news, it’s been reported that Barcelona are scouring the market for a replacement. They’ve reportedly shown interest in Rodri, but a much affordable option would be Leon Goretzka, who’s currently a free agent after his Bayern Munich contract expired at the end of last month.

Goretzka is a player that Hansi Flick knows well from their time together at Bayern, although Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcelona are not currently interested in signing the Germany international as a replacement for de Jong.

“One name that is being linked with several clubs, especially with Barcelona, is Leon Goretzka. Why does this rumour exist? Because Frenkie de Jong will be out for a few months after suffering an injury with the Dutch national team, and Goretzka is an important player currently available on a free after leaving Bayern Munich.

“Goretzka has that connection with Hansi Flick, so there are rumours about the possibility that we could see him going to Barcelona to replace Frenkie de Jong. According to my information, Barcelona are not working on Goretzka at this stage, nor are they in active talks for him.”

Should Barcelona sign a replacement for de Jong?

Flick’s options for central midfielder are far from ideal at this stage, given that he will only have Marc Bernal and Marc Casado at 100% for the start of the new season – this is because Pedri and Gavi will return late after featuring for Spain at the World Cup. In this sense, it would be wise for another option to be signed, although it does not appear to be a priority at this stage.
